ENMA 401 / ENMA 601: Continuum Modeling of Materials

An introductory course on continuum modeling in materials science and engineering, emphasizing applications of continuum modeling techniques using the COMSOL software package to simulate a range of materials phenomena and properties.

Format: Lectures paired with hands-on COMSOL computer labs, each with a take-home homework component. Graduate students in ENMA 601 complete additional problems on each lab/homework. Coursework culminates in a final project — a significant continuum-modeling study of the student’s choosing, with a presentation and final report; graduate students emphasize the design and analysis of models addressing a proposed research problem.
By the end of the course, students can construct, mesh, and analyze continuum models; perform continuum modeling of structural mechanics, heat transfer, electrical current, and chemical species transport in materials; and design finite element models for materials problems.
Prerequisites: ENMA 362 or equivalent, Physics 270/271 or equivalent, MATH 246 or equivalent, and introductory MATLAB.
